Sceletium tortuosum is traditionally used to elevate mood and to counteract anxiety, stress and tension. It contains mesembrine and mesembrine-type alkaloids, mesembrine is a potent serotonin-uptake inhibitor. Neurons in the brain releases serotonin (a neurotransmitter) that allows a signal to transient via it to the receiving neuron. It has been shown that in individuals suffering from depression, stress and anxiety, serotonin is lacking. Mesembrine in Sceletium tortuosum increases the serotonin levels in the neuron receptors by acting as a serotonin-uptake inhibitor, thereby increasing the possibility of signal transfer in neurons.

Side effects and special precautions: High doses of Sceletium may cause euphoria. Not to be taken with other medication without consultation with a medical practitioner. 
Not to be taken during pregnancy or lactation. 
Very few people experience side-effects. The reported side-effects include occasional episodes of: Mild headache, Slight nausea, no vomiting, Soft stool or loose stool with no cramping, Transient increase in anxiety or irritability an hour after initiating treatment, which resolves after an hour or so, Insomnia: corrected by lowering the dose or taking the product not later than midday, A feeling of sedation: corrected by taking the product as a single dose at night.
NO severe adverse effects have been documented.
Contra indications: No confirmed reports of drug interactions have been made. Interactions with other pharmacokinetic drugs may occur because of the neuro-receptor activities of Sceletium. People taking any psychiatric drug (including all anti-anxiety drugs, sedatives, hypnotics, antidepressants and anti-psychotics and so-called designer or recreational drugs) or any cardiac medications, are advised not to take Sceletium-containing products.
